Determination of the permanganate index by colorimetric titration

The permanganate index is used to estimate the amount of oxidizable matter (organic and inorganic) in water. This index is therefore an important water quality criterion.

The permanganate index of water is expressed as the mass concentration of oxygen equivalent to the quantity of permanganate ions consumed during the dosage.
