Grotthuss mechanism

This mechanism indicates that H⁺ (or HO^-) ions move from one water molecule to another thanks to the formation and rupture of hydrogen bonds: each oxygen atom transfers and simultaneously receives one hydrogen atom. The theory was proposed in 1806 by Grotthuss, hence its name.
