Size-exclusion chromatography

Size-exclusion chromatography, also known as steric-exclusion chromatography, is used to separate compounds according to their molecular size from exclusion gel particles.

• Small molecules will penetrate into the pores of the gel particles, and will be strongly retained inside the column.
• Large molecules will not be able to penetrate the pores at all and will therefore be excluded: they will migrate quickly with the mobile phase.
