Determination of ammonium ions using spectrophotometry

There are several methods for determining ammonium ions in water. The Nessler reagent spectrophotometric method will be presented here because of its ease of implementation.

The technique works for water containing over 0.1 mg.L-1 of ammoniacal nitrogen (expressed in NH4+). However, it cannot be applied to water that is colored or turbid or water with a high content of organic matter.
